Introduction to Geodesy: The History and Concepts of Modern Geodesy by James R. Smith, X
Geodesy made easy an accessible introduction to a rapidly changing field Geodesy is the science that deals with the earth's figure and the interrelationship of selected points on its surface. This user-friendly introduction presents what might be called "geodesy without mathematics." A revised edition of the author's Basic Geodesy, Introduction to Geodesy avoids complex formulas and equations and provides a broad overview for students and professionals who require a basic understanding of the subject. Topics include: Traditional survey positioning techniques Geodetic systems, including horizontal and vertical geodetic datums Physical geodesy The world geodetic system Satellite geodesy The Global Positioning System Gravity measures Electromagnetic distance measurement Projections Examples of modern projects.

Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires by Newell McDowell,
Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires by Newell McDowell,
Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have stressed the need to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. This is the second edition of a reference book that provides in-depth reviews of the quality of the leading health measurements that are used for these purposes. Its principal aim is to guide the reader in choosing among rival measurement methods and to score the instrument chosen. The book also provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for health measurements. Eighty-eight measurements that evaluate health via questionnaires or rating scales are reviewed. Accounts of the 50 scales included in the first edition have been updated, the original chapters have been expanded to include new methods, and two new chapters on depression measurements and mental status testing have been added. The book covers measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, depression, mental status, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments. The description of each method includes its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity, and a copy of the scale. This book is intended as a reference work for researchers from the medical and social sciences, and for health professionals wishing to evaluate the progress of their patients. It has also been used as a text in health services research courses.

Ancient Arabic units of measurement - The Arabic system of measurement is based on the Persian system.

Dutch units of measurement - The Dutch system was not standardised until Napoleon introduced the metric system. Different towns used measures with the same names but differing sizes.

Ancient Greek units of measurement - The Greek system of weights and measures was built mainly upon the Egyptian, and formed the basis of the later Roman system.

Obsolete Russian units of measurement - A native system of weights and measures was used in Imperial Russia and after the Russian Revolution, but became obsolete in 1924 when it was replaced in the Soviet Union by a metric system.
